In June 2016, PICVISA was awarded a major European grant under the R & D program H2020 for the development of artificial vision solutions for the extraction of glass contained in municipal solid waste.
Although the selective collection of glass is a common practice in Europe, the mixed glass content in urban waste (in the remainder fraction) is maintained in proportions above 5%. This glass contaminates the recyclable materials, in particular the compost obtained from the organic fraction, or is sent to landfill as rejection. The solution proposed by PICVISA will allow the recycling of such glass and its subsequent recovery.
PICVISA will develop, in a period of 20 months, artificial vision equipment and a prototype plant in which glass waste can be extracted from a wide range of urban waste and its by-products.
